PLEASE KILL S-722! DON'T LET AMA & FDA DESTROY DSHEA!

United States Senate
Washington D.C. 20510

Dear Senator __________________________________

I respectfully urge you to do all in your power to kill S-722. It was
introduced March 26th, 2003 by Senator Richard J. Durbin (D-IL).
It's intent is to overturn the main provisions of the Dietary
Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA).

Senators Hatch and Harkin working with Rep. Bill Richardson (D-NM)
won unanimous enactment of DSHEA after years of debate in congress.

S-722 would give a hostile FDA the potential power to remove
thousands of herbs and other dietary supplements from the marketplace,
as it's tried to do for decades. It would only take on complaint to
trigger FDA's action.

S-722 would give FDA complete discretion to make this determination
regardless of whether the product was used by consumers who
completely disregarded dosage, cautions, or warnings by the
manufacturer on the label.

S-722 would require premarket approval for caffeine in herbs and
dietary supplements but would specifically exempt manufacturers of
drugs and foods like coffee, tea, and soft drinks from that requirement.

The American Medical Association (AMA) now demands that Congress
act to revoke DSHEA.
(See JAMA editorial 3/26/03 Vol. 289 No. 12, p 1568).

FDA and AMA have worked since 1994 to gut DSHEA. Don't let them!

Gratefully Yours,
