The common plant, lobelia, has been called by many names, one of which was Indian tobacco. It contains a substance called lobeline, which exhibits properties that are similar to nicotine; that is, it has a relaxing effect.

Lobeline is chemically similar to nicotine, but unlike nicotine, it is non-addictive and helps nourish the respiratory system.

Some historians believe the plant was actually smoked by the Native Americans, just like tobacco. Well, this important relaxant property of lobelia has not escaped the attention of herbalists.
