Lecithin is vital to every cell in the human body. It is especially important to the health of the brain and heart systems.

Lecithin is available in foods like eggs, liver, soybeans, wheat germ, butter and peanuts.

It is also available through supplementation, which provides additional support to the nervous and circulatory systems.

Lecithin is a fat-like substance often referred to as a phospholipid. If the diet is adequate, lecithin is produced daily by the liver. It is needed by every cell in the body and is a key building block of cell membranes, without it, they would harden.

Lecithin protects cells from oxidation and largely comprises the protective sheaths surrounding the brain.

Although it is a fatty substance, it is also a fat emulsifier. Emulsifiers in the body play an important role in fat digestion and circulatory health.

The nervous system may benefit from the choline portion of the lecithin molecule. Several studies link choline (a key component of lecithin) with learning and memory.
