Cortisol is a hormone produced in the adrenal glands in response to stress. It promotes the formation of glucose, which is used as fuel during stressful situations. Nature’s Cortisol Formula contains Relora® to help the body manage stress and maintain cortisol levels already within the normal range. Cortisol is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands in the adrenal cortex. The adrenal cortex (outer layers of the gland) secretes the androgen DHEA, the mineralcorticoid aldosterone and glucocorticoids. The glucocorticoids are aptly named due to their effect on blood glucose levels. The adrenal medulla (middle of the gland) secretes the catecholamines epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine. DHEA is a hormone secreted by the adrenal cortex. DHEA may oppose cortisol in that DHEA is an anabolic or building hormone and cortisol has a catabolic or breakdown effect on metabolism. In general, when cortisol levels are high, DHEA levels are low, and vice versa. When cortisol is released by the adrenal gland, it stimulates gluconeogenesis. Gluconeogenesis is the metabolic process where the body creates new glucose to dump into the blood stream. This is part of the fight or flight response. Cortisol stimulates gluconeogenesis to keep elevated blood sugar levels to supply the brain and muscles with fast energy. Nature’s Cortisol Formula does not contain cortisol as an ingredient but contains ingredients that modulate cortisol secretion. Banaba leaf is a tropical plant from the Philippines which contains an active ingredient called corosolic acid. Corosolic acid aids glucose transport into cells and is commonly used in blood sugar balancing formulas. (Remember, stress stimulates cortisol which stimulates gluconeogenesis which results in elevated blood sugar levels). The corosolic acid aims to balance those blood glucose levels. Elevated blood sugar levels also arise from overeating. Magnolia bark extract contains two actives: magnolol and honokiol. These two compounds have a calming effect on the body and have been used as calming digestive aids. The theory is that reducing anxiety can reduce stress and reduce cortisol formation which may help reduce appetite and fat mobilization to the abdomen. Relora® is a researched, proprietary blend of Magnolia Bark Extract (Magnolia officinalis) and Phellodendron Bark Extract (Phellodendron amurense). Theanine is an amino acid found in Green tea. This amino acid has a calming and relaxing effect on the body. Again, the idea is the use of calming herbs may help reduce the secretion of cortisol.
