Revising a long-standing anti-vitamin policy, The Journal of the American Medical Association has advised all adults to take at least one multivitamin a day. This advice is based on research assessing the result of an accumulating list of positive advances in nutritional science in the past 30 years. The researchers, Dr. Robert H. Fletcher and Kathleen M. Fairfield of Harvard University, reviewed over 150 studies to determine the health benefits of nine vitamins. They wrote that while the North American diet is basically sufficient to prevent extreme vitamin deficiency diseases such as scurvy, pellagra and beriberi, insufficient vitamin intake can contribute to chronic diseases including coronary heart disease, cancer and osteoporosis. The findings by Drs. Fletcher and Fairfield are being hailed as a turning point in American nutrition by Industry associations. Researchers hope that JAMA's endorsement will encourage more people to reap the health benefits of a daily multi-vitamin. Between 80 and 90 percent of Americans do not eat at least five servings of fruit and vegetables a day, the recommended minimum amount believed to provide sufficient essential nutrients. "All of us grew up believing that if we ate a reasonable diet, that would take care of our vitamin needs," Fletcher said. "But the new evidence, much of it in the last couple of years, is that vitamins also prevent the usual diseases we deal with every day-heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis and birth defects." Meanwhile, the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) also issued a report saying that the consistent use of multivitamins and other key supplements can promote good health and help prevent diseases. The 100+-page report titled, "The Benefits of Nutritional Supplements," reviewed more than a decade's worth of the most scientifically significant studies measuring the health benefits of multis and other nutritional supplements including antioxidants, calcium, long chain omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins D, B6 and B12 and folic acid.
